For his latest exhibition at Galerie Joaquin Online, James Gabito continues to look back into nostalgia and retrospect as he presents a visually-abundant series of works in “Vignettes of Yesterday”. In hindsight, the artist is determined to recall, revive, and even reshape, our perception of a Manila that once was.

By illustrating figuratively-abstract portraits of everyday humans back in the Old Manila scene, Gabito encapsulates a feeling of quaint euphoria through free-formed yet intentional brush strokes – bold and brave strikes of color and form bring about childlike and innocent figurations of characters from scenes of cultivated harvest. Further, Gabito portrays his perceptions of an Old Town Manila as if culled from a fever dream; his deliberate technique of painting as if capturing an in-motion state of display depicts an outsider’s perspective of history, as one can only recollect memories of the past through visual mementos.

In view of these, “Vignettes of Yesterday” is an essential recreation of the past, derived from Gabito’s sentiments of life and culture in a time-bound custom and setting. Yet, the artist keeps the spirit of Old Manila intact through his own adroit visualizations, culminating perceptions and interpretations anew.
James Gabito, a Baguio-based artist, 2015 GSIS honorable mention, and 2015 MADE finalist, paints archetypes of Old Manila, attesting to an unspoiled and vibrant way of living. Gabito assembles these images with a sense of artisanal intricacy and rawness to his subjects.
